The U.S. Department of Energy recently completed the second of a three part study to determine the environmental friendliness of lamping options over their entire life cycle. While part one of the study found that LEDs and CFLs consume the same amount of energy during use part two of the study took into consideration the manufacture of both LEDs and CFLs.
It was determined that, while both CFLs and LEDs are both significantly more efficient than their incandescent counterparts, the process for the manufacture of LEDs has far less of an environmental impact than CFLs.
